The initial forest gardens here started by turning hard clay pack into rich growing soil, wheelbarrow by wheelbarrow. By utilizing resourceful Permaculture methods, the gardens aim to creative problem solve, produce biodiverse food and herbs, highlight native plants and endangered species, preserve wildlife habitat, and offer a special space for learning and relaxing.
The no-till Hugelkultur, layered garden beds are free of inorganic chemicals and efficiently watered by rain and rainwater collection. Local organic compost provides the fertile foundation for our happy plants to thrive.
Healthy rich soil building will continue to be a priority here at Blue Feather, as will biodiversity and seed saving. Heirloom varieties alongside organic and hybrid seeds are currently purchased from mindful, local seed companies. Pinetree Garden Seeds here in Maine is a personal favorite!
This growing season was filled with valuable lessons and RAIN; the most I can ever recall! After more than doubling the garden beds and direct a wide variety of beautiful herbs, vegetables, fruits, and flowers in June, many did not germinate as it rained for almost two months straight!
As Autumn sets in, it is comforting to reflect on what did work like the Dragon Tongue bush beans, classic perennials, and the cyclical array of wild plants that never disappoint in generous displays of natural beauty.
At Blue Feather Off Grid, it is all about resilience! After a challenging year of rain in 2023, I am expanding the gardens even more, including planting in the new Hugelkultur bed that was created with help from Rogue Natural Farming out of San Diego, California. The layers include biochar, mycelium-rich leaf litter and soil, and even a layer of properly aged humanure (3+ years of decomposition).
Stay tuned as I share more garden shenanigans on my YouTube channel... Blue Feather Off Grid~
